Building pre-school Q'uenco (Peru)
Our Project
One of our reliable contacts in Peru mentioned to us that there is hardly any attention to education for children, particularly not for young children in the mountains. KinderZon wanted to contribute in improving this situation and to realize a pre-school. In realizing this wish, our choice to work together with the HoPe Foundation was a perfect choice. HoPe is active in Peru for many years and realized many successful projects, also on education.

With a substantial donation from KinderZon a complete pre-school has been realized. Besides a big classroom the school also has a small office and a bedroom for the teacher. This project had a wonderful side-effect. The local people and pupils of the technical school did all the work themselves. This resulted in a strong ownership of the local inhabitants. They will be careful on their new pre-school for sure.

Our visit
On the 2nd of May the chairman and his oldest son have made a visit to the community Q‘uenco (to be pronounced as Kienko). This community is located approximately 1 ¾ hours drive (on very bad roads) from Cusco on an altitude of nearly 4000 meter in the Andes mountains. About 100 families live in this community. The school is so appealing that children from surrounding communities walk 2 hours to join classes every day.

Although the school was officially closed on the day of the visit due to the celebration of a Catholic Day, the local population did welcome us more than warm and heartily. Many parents and children had enthusiastic stories and even the school doors were opened to show us around. One can imagine that the exercise books, pencils and candies were happily accepted.

Saying goodbye was not possible without the ‘normal’ hospitality of the local people. We were offered boiled and roasted potatoes. Despite their poverty guests should be taken care of!

This visit clearly showed that the school has proven its benefit to the people living in these remote communities. It was and is a good feeling!!!
