Streetkids in Lima (Peru): Our visit
On the 28th of April the chairman and his oldest son made a private visit to the activities of Bruce Peru. They spoke to all the relevant people and visited various locations.

Bruce en Ana, the driving forces behind the Bruce Peru Organisation, first showed the recently started schools in the slum areas of Lima. Being there, we could see how a tangible start was made with the education in Villa Maria, Pamplona and San Juan de Miraflores. Bruce and his team has the philosophy to make fast progress to show results to the local people. They prefer to start in less beautiful places, but focus on supplying education straight away. A good example of this is the decorating of an available local and small house in the slum areas of Villa Maria.

In San Juan de Miraflores a local ‘entrepreneur’ who exploits a billiard hall at night, offered her space during the day to our project.

This woman is very much respected locally. Together with Bruce Peru she convinced the poor people to send their children to school. This school was opened shortly before our visit and the first 8 kids already joined.

In Pamplona we saw a similar example. In a building where the poor people are offered food at the end of the day, classes will be given during the day. On the morning of our visit the school was first opened.

At first the local people were sceptic (and afraid for organ criminals and child robbery) when they heard about the initiative to offer free education. Meanwhile they are convinced, cooperative and enthusiastic. There was a warm welcome for us.

Here after, the central location of Bruce Peru was visited in the Lima Miraflores district. This is a safe place where the international volunteers are based and where the classrooms are for the language courses.

At night, from private funds, a dinner was offered to the volunteers. Besides all the efforts, it was now time for relaxation. The volunteers mostly are young people who are working (minimum for a few months) to the benefit of the less privileged children. They do that with great passion, effort and commitment.

Bruce en Ana are examples to everybody who feels committed to the less privileged children. For many years already they are a source of inspiration for others, but are working as hard as everybody else.
