Streetkids in Ecuador: Progress
Juli 2006
Quito Northwest' CHILDREN'S CENTRE is in the Quito Northwest community, a poor section on the north side of Quito, Ecuador. Our aim is to offer the opportunity of becoming educated to children who missed their chance to go to school so far due to extreme poverty, abandonment or abuse. Bruce Ecuador have agreed to provide education to the children in our care, looking forward to the time when we have them prepared to matriculate into the national school system at the grades they would have entered had they attending school all these years..

The Quito Northwest Children's Centre is housed in a building, shared by its owners; some lovely nuns who operate a child care and family support programme in this community..

A marvellous feature of Quito Northwest is that the residents are so helpful in leading us to children who need our help. We are delighted that Kyle and his team have located our first school in this community, in cooperation with the kind nuns. Within three months the number of children daily attending our classes has risen to 31, and we are preparing for it to continue to grow.

Some quotes from the project director:

Primavera school:
"This is the big bright spot.  In the North school, yesterday we had 28 students and today we had 31.  I also know three additional kids will come tomorrow or Monday.  At least two new students have come each day for the past five days.  Also we have had to refuse 10 kids because they already attend school so we have been good in not allowing students who already attend school.  The 10 students come from a nearby community where I know there a sufficient number of students for another school.  I think this will be a good opportunity."

South School:
"Again we will be ending this week and will start up again in September.  I plan on meeting with the local volunteer team on Monday to secure a location in the Mayorista market.  The two south schools will be in the afternoon, so we can maximize our volunteer utilization.

Overall I may be optimistic, but with additional volunteers ( which I know we can find) we could have five classes with close to 100 students.  Three classes of 20 in the north and two in the south. And this is without looking for additional school locations because the majority of students are in the south."

Our New Centre in Quito
Accommodation for 12 volunteers, in the most interesting part of the city. From here we will begin to venture out each week day morning, to the barrios where the poorest children in Quito live but do not go to school.

Kyle is the first Project Coordinator of our work in Ecuador. His priorities are to furnish and staff our Quito centre on Paseo Carrion, while deciding between the several schools where we have been offered space to start our programme in and around the capital of Ecuador He has the good help of Sarah, Tate and Matietta; which could also lead to opening in an entirely new location.
Most Eecuadorian children not in school live in Citiy slums.

2 April

At the start of the projects in Panama and Ecuador KinderZon wanted to wish best luck and success to the staff and volunteers. The following message was sent:

Dear team member of the projects in Ecuador and Panama,

From far I want to send you my sincere feelings of proud that all of you are so much willing to help the children who so desperately need care and education. It is a great effort that all of you will put into the projects. We from KinderZon are busy raising funds to help you out with necessary costs. It is however your tough but inspiring daily work to make this project successful. There will be moments of difficulties and maybe frustration. Please believe me when I say that after getting through such a period you will come out stronger and even more important you have served to the benefit of the children. Looking back you will see that you will have made a real change into the life's of these children and that's all what it is about.
So, enjoy your stay there, bring all of your best and let us make it happen!!!!!

Best regards,
Marc Zwaaneveld
President of the KinderZon Foundation
